Description Riccardo Robecchi 2025-06-12 12:42:25 UTC
SUMMARY
After restarting plasmashell (e.g. "kquitapp6 plasmashell && kstart plasmashell"), icons are often reshuffled and appear in random order. Clicking on any icon to open an app will make them go back to their intended position. Sometimes this means that all the icons go back to the correct order, other times I have to open 2 or 3 applications before everything is sorted.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Restart plasmashell

OBSERVED RESULT
Icons in icons-only task manager are reshuffled.

EXPECTED RESULT
Icons keep their intended position.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: KDE neon
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.14.0
Qt Version: 6.9.0

You too!? Apparently I'm not crazy! I've been seeing this for over a year now. David Edmundson sat down with me at the Plasma sprint for some debugging but couldn't quickly figure it out before we ran out of time.

For me, clicking on an empty area of the panel is often enough to make them snap to their correct positions. Sometimes I have to focus an already-running-but-not-active app, too.

I've *always* seen this, even back when I used Latte, but somehow I never remembered to open a bug report. In my case, only opening an app that isn't currently running seems to fix it. It is definitely weird!

I have the same thing, but it fixes itself after a couple seconds, so I usually don't notice. But it was extremely annoying while testing changes to task manager tooltips a few months ago.
