Description Ellie 2025-06-02 04:13:46 UTC
SUMMARY

Signing in to a Wayland session through SDDM doesn’t display the splash screen, instead just showing a black screen until the desktop loads. Signing into an X11 session shows the splash screen as normal

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Select any Splash Screen in settings
2. Select the Plasma (Wayland) session on the SDDM login screen
3. Sign in as normal

OBSERVED RESULT
The display flickers grey, then stays black until the desktop loads.

EXPECTED RESULT
The display shows the splash screen until the desktop loads

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: 6.14.9-arch1-1
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.14.0
Qt Version: 6.9.0

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

I’ve had this happen on both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, as well as both on my nearly fresh Arch install and a Fedora KDE live USB. Configuring sddm to use kwin_wayland as per the arch wiki prevents the splash screen from showing altogether, even when signing into an X11 session.

Hmm, I can't reproduce this issue on Fedora 42, either installed or using their live USB. Hardware info:

Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7840U w/ Radeon™ 780M Graphics
Memory: 16 GiB of RAM (14.9 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon 780M
Product Name: HP Pavilion Plus Laptop 14-ey0XXX

I do see the splash screen when booting into the fedora live USB, but don’t see it again when logging out and back in. Here is someone on reddit experiencing the same issue https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/s/a9SaiseOFt
Here is my hardware info:
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8-Core Processor
Memory: 30.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD RX 9070

I wonder if it is something to do with my monitor, or the desktop just loading up to fast, but I wonder then why I still see the splash screen every time when logging into an X11 session.

Logging out of the live session and back in while the USB disk is still inserted?

Yes. Also, on my main install, if Spectacle is open when rebooting it shows a shadow of the splash screen fading into the desktop, but I never see that on my display.

Just tried logging out of the Fedora 42 live session and logging back in, and I still see the splash screen there as expected.

Sorry if this isn't terribly helpful, but for what it's worth...I could swear I remember either Vlad or Xaver telling me in the KWin Matrix room that there was something different between how Wayland and X11 work when handing off of the virtual console?

That conversation was in the context of talking about this issue - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=504258 - but maybe something about that is relevant here as well? (Just thinking of things that are 1. different between Wayland and X11 and 2. involve that period right after SDDM hands off to the Plasma session)

Can you still reproduce this in Plasma 6.4.4 or later?
