SUMMARY Because plasma-workspace is the one that generate .desktop file for both plasmaX11 and plasmaWayland, that cause to have a possibly broken session in sddm. If that session is open the only way to exit it is either run a command in a terminal or forcefully shutdown the pc. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Uninstall kwin_x11 2. logout/reboot 3. in sddm select plasma X11 OBSERVED RESULT A session is open that is broken. It is only possible to open app, but decoration, moving/resizing window, and all effects (virtual desktop,...) don't work. EXPECTED RESULT The session should not be present if kwin_x11 is not installed (and i image the same if kwin is not installed but kwin_x11 is) SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Operating System: Arch Linux KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.90 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.14.0 Qt Version: 6.9.0 Kernel Version: 6.14.7-5-cachyos (64-bit) Graphics Platform: Wayland Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS with Radeon Graphics Memory: 16 GiB of RAM (14.9 GiB usable) Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon 680M ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This is not specific to any distro (tested on neon) and as the separation of packages between kwin_x11 and kwin implies, it should be able to only have one of them.
It's okay to have both kwin and kwin-x11 installed at the same time. The final decision is left to distros. They can install both kwin and kwin-x11, or they can install only kwin but provide X11 session files in a separate package that user should install together with kwin-x11.
Arch Linux developers are already aware of this issue.
It will not hurt to send an email list to the distributions mailing list to talk about this issue though.
