*** If you're not sure this is actually a bug, instead post about it at https://discuss.kde.org If you're reporting a crash, attach a backtrace with debug symbols; see https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports Please remove this comment after reading and before submitting - thanks! *** SUMMARY STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Open a file layer when you create your new file 2. Create new layer to trace the file imported 3. Duplicate that layer and trial different colour schemes by using the bucket tool and colour dropper 4. For me, the program wouldn't let me zoom in - either with mousewheel or my drawing pad. Sometimes the drawing cursor wouldn't show on the screen. 5. So you don't lose your progress, save your work and allow it to save as a Krita file too. 6. Close and re-open Krita to find your layers have all been merged and the quality has dropped, your outlines are jagged from using your brush, and the bucket tool areas are also very jagged. OBSERVED RESULT All layers have all been merged and the quality has dropped, the outlines are jagged from using a brush, and the bucket tool areas are also very jagged. EXPECTED RESULT Layers to remain the same/how they were before I closed the program after saving, smooth lines and good quality. Hi, welcome here, bug report well received, good for a first one! You probably saved to a file format that doesn't support layers, and that also has a compression feature to compress the file (in exchange of reducing the quality). The JPEG or JPG format is known for that, and useful to share picture online. If you want to keep your quality and save layer, you need to save as KRA files. Find while saving the "Files of Type: Krita document (*.kra *.krz) option." I hope it will help, if it is, don't hesitate to reply here. If it wasn't this the solution to your issue, feel free to add more information here, and details the saving steps and option you are using. Waiting for that, I'll put the bug report in NEEDSINFO/WAITINGFORINFO.
By the way, I read you activated "and allow it to save as a Krita file too." , so if you saved as test.jpg you should also have a test.jpg.kra file near to it, in the same directory. This one should contain your layers and be lossless quality. Let us know if this file wasn't created despite the option checked. I tested here, and the additional .kra file was created.
