Description Alessandro Cini 2025-05-07 21:19:53 UTC
SUMMARY
Startup and watching picture is very slow. I have 30.000 pictures in my archive. I tried too speed up startup by changing from SQLite to internal mySql but it became even slower (from 23 seconds to 35 seconds).
The rendering of pictures is even a little too slow (If I press "next" picture, it takes like half a second to see it). I used microsoft live photo gallery before and it was way faster. I like Digikam (and that's the reason why I'm still using it) but it is too slow.

If digiKam is slow both when starting with only 30,000 images and when displaying them, check your machine.
Note that digiKam must first collect the metadata of the 30,000 images, which can take a long time. Remove digiKam and Exiftool from your antivirus program's monitoring. Otherwise, we need a DebugView log from digiKam's startup, as described here for Windows:

I see messages in the logs that come from QWebEngine, presumably from the graphics system, and they always seem to take a few seconds.
I'll have to test this on my Windows systems. Please enable the option to force software OpenGL in the digiKam settings under Miscellaneous -> System to see if it makes a difference.

I've just found that loading image is way more speed by unchecking the flag to use exiftool to read metadata from file! That's no more an issue at all.
At this point, the only part that takes too much time is startup of the program. It still takes about 26 seconds...
