Hello,
A remote SQL database isn't particularly fast.
Displaying the faces of a person can take a very long time when there are 18,000 of them. The program also takes a very long time to start when digiKam starts with a large data set for a person.

My suggestion would be a date filter for the faces, which could be set to a specific year (creation time). 
Would this increase the speed?
