Description Nik Nikovsky 2025-04-13 14:13:30 UTC
SUMMARY
When trying to set a boot splash screen on the latest version of KDE neon (I think), the system settings page hangs for a few seconds and then supposedly applies it.
Upon reboot, the animation is not applied.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open System Settings
2. Navigate to Colors and Themes > Boot Splash Screen and attempt to apply one (tribar or details for example)
3. Observe and reboot

OBSERVED RESULT
The previous boot screen shows up (KDE neon logo with a spinner)

EXPECTED RESULT
Something else, I do not really know how the tribar thing looks like, there is no preview.

Hi - to double-check, can you confirm if the alternative themes you're selecting are applied correctly on the next boot if you run the following command in Konsole?

pkcon install plymouth-themes

I'm suspecting that the extra themes aren't fully installed as packaged by default, as I was able to reproduce those themes not working initially, but installing that additional Ubuntu package seemed to fix it in my VM.

Thanks!

Wait, pkcon install, not apt install?

I think either could work in this case - pkcon is, as I understand it, generally a bit safer on Neon since it uses the same mechanisms that Discover would use.

I have done what you said and it actually applied, but the previews are still not showing up for those.
I also haven't touched the status so I don't mess with anything, hope you understand.
Comment 5 John Kizer 2025-04-15 00:04:08 UTC
The preview pictures might not be created by the upstream projects - but it looks like the core issue is that there are System Settings icons for Boot Splash options that aren't actually preinstalled, so it would seem like either those icons should be removed or the splash screens should be fully installed.

Shifting this over to the Neon product so this can be tracked as part of the distribution packaging there.

Thanks!

Changing that because this is on Unstable Edition (as shown in the description)

Thumbnails are still broken, I have installed plymouth-themes and applied the Bizcom glow theme and will report if it's applied

It shows up on shutdown, not not when booting, it just defaulted to the spinner.
