Digikam snapshot

Hello,
I use Geosetter software to set GPS data in my photos. Thoss data are recognized because the logo appears on each photo. Attached to this request is an extract of the photos' Exif data and a snapshot of the photo in Digikam.
However, the GPS data is not included in the catalog. I tried refreshing it, but without success.
Before Digikam version 8, this feature worked correctly. Country name / Province state / City / Sub location data was included in the Catalog as tags.
Is this a bug, or do I need to use command(s) and / or option(s) in the configuration for the GPS data to be included in the catalog ?
Thank you for your help in resolving this issue.

Extraction Exif

Bonjour,

Comment 2 Maik Qualmann 2025-03-18 10:35:49 UTC
A sample image would be good. If digiKam displays the earth icon in the thumbnail, the GPS data is in the database.

Your location tags are located in the location IPTC/XMP metadata; digiKam has never adopted these as tags.

It is possible to adopt this location information as tags using reverse geolocation in the digiKam Geolocation Editor. This is still possible, but must be enabled under the reverse geolocation options.

Example of picture with GPS data added by Geosetter software

Bonjour Maik
Merci pour votre réponse rapide et claire.
Dans quelle partie des Exif les données GPS doivent-elles être enregistrées afin de les retrouver automatiquement / directement dans le catalogue Digikam ?
Vous avez écrit "It is possible to adopt this location information as tags using reverse geolocation in the digiKam Geolocation Editor. This is still possible, but must be enabled under the reverse geolocation options." Merci de m'aider à activer cette option que je n'ai pas trouvée.

Vous trouverez en pièce jointe un exemple de photo dont les données GPS ont été positionné par l'application Geosetter.

I can't reproduce any problem with your image. The GPS coordinates are there, as are the tags.
Geosetter saves the tags in the EXIF Windows XP Keywords metadata. The tags in the image are: "Bretagne;France;Bateau;Mer;Intra Muros"

This should work for you as well. Perhaps the images were opened in another program, in which case the metadata might not be read. Run the function for the image in the Menu under Items -> Re-read Metadata from Image to Database.

Bonjour Maik,

If you prefer, even if my english is very poor, I can write my messages in
english.

Many thanks in advance for you help Maik

Hi,

The 8.7.0 pre-release Windows installer from today have been rebuilt from
scratch with Qt 6.8.3, KDE 6.12, OpenCV 4.11 + CUDA support, Exiv2 0.28.5, ExifTool 13.27, ffmpeg 7, all image codecs updated to last version (jxl, avif, heif, aom, etc.).

Please try with this version to see if your problem still reproducible...

Thanks in advance
Best regards

Hello Gilles,

I dislike to install pre-release except if in the "New Features and Major
Changes" something is related with my concern.

I do prefer to work with you on stable version and to understand clearly
the reason why Maik Qualmann is not able to reproduce my issue.

So you can find attached in this mail

   1. The XMP file (sidecar file) which contents the GPS data that I cannot
   retrieve in the Digikam Catalog
   2. Some screenshots from my configuration file (customizing)

My process is the following

   1. Creation of the XMP file with the application GoeSetter. This
application is very useful as from GPS data, you can retrieve data as
elevation, country, Province state, city and sub location
   2. I start Digikam and I perform a refresh / reread metadata from the
newest directory / files without success. The "extra GPS data" (country,
Province state, city and sub location) remain unknown in the catalogue !

Fell free to ask me more information which will be useful to understand the
issue.

Thanks in advance for your help

Hello Maik and Gilles,

1 month after my reply, I do not have any answer from Digikam and so, I am
still facing the issue.

I would like to know if the my side car file, the GPS data as country,
Province state, city and sub location can be included in the Digikam
catalog ?

If not, is that a way by updating the "Configuration Digikam" to solve my
issue ?

Which information can I send to in order to help you for understanding the
issue ?

Many thanks en advance for your help

Import from Geosetter Screenshot

Here is your sample image from comment 3. The screenshot shows that the GPS position and tags from Geosetter are present.

Hello Maik,

I believe there is a miss-understanding from the beginning.

I agree with you that the GPS data setup by Geosetter are read by Digikam.

My concern is those GPS data are not seen as *Digikam catalog entries*.

What I would like to know, if they is a way that the GPS data setup by
Geosetter as country, Province state, city and sub location can be seen as
Digikam catalog entries ?

For time being, I have to create manually those entries in the Digikam
catalog while they exist in the XMP file.

Is that on my side, wrong setup in "Settings > Configure Digikam" or on
your side Digikam catalog programs are not designed for working that way
and then I have to create the catalog entries manually as I do for time
being ?

Many thanks en advance for your help

Best Regards

Comment 12 Maik Qualmann 2025-05-19 12:21:53 UTC
Well, Geosetter only saves the individual geotags, without a path. The tags do appear in the digiKam tag view, but not as State->City->Street as you want.

How should digiKam assign that? Geosetter would have to save it as a hierarchy. Unfortunately, Geosetter doesn't create IPTC location tags, which would make assignment possible.

digiKam would have to "know" that, for example, France is a state, Paris a city, and so on. That would be another thing for an AI.

Hi Maik,

Thank for your quick answer.

Following your reply, I understand that I cannot get directly the
"hierarchy" State -> City -> Street and so on.

But is that a way to setup "Settings > Configure Digikam" in order to get
the "individual geotag saved by Geosetter" as single entries in the
Digikam catalog ?
Then, everyone can manually arrange those individual tags following the
hierarchy they choose / prefer.

That design can be used by many people as a possibility to manage different
parameters by adding them in the IPTC part.

And a last question, which parameter should Geosetter to setup in order
Digikam will be able to use them as Digikam Catalog entries ?
As single entry or as a hierarchy.

Many thanks in advance for your help

Best Regards
