I think the reason why the token is being refused only gets logged if you place a file at ~/.config/QtProject/qtlogging.ini with this content:

[Rules]
kwin_core=true

then restart and fetch another log

So the issue was an empty org.kde.plasmashell.desktop in my .config/applications folder ultimately causing plasmashell to be launched without its X-KDE-Wayland-Interfaces= variable set seems to be what was up.  Upon deletion of blank file everything works as expected.
