Description Ralph Barhydt 2002-11-02 17:54:16 UTC
Version: 1.4.3 (using KDE 3.0.3)
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 3.2
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.19-4GB

I have a windows 2000 machine in my office that runs a Eudora client. My mail server is at Verio. I filter my mail at the office and forward mail from my primary account, reb@xcaret.com, to two other accounts. The other accounts are rbarhydt@mac.com and linux@xcaret.com. I have two machines at home, one a Mac and the other an Intel Linux machine. It is obvious which email addresses I use for which. When I check forwarded mail on the mac, things come through fine. Occasionally on the linux machine, the mail comes through but the body text is completely blank. When this happens, I check the mac machine to see if the body of the message is there and it always is. The version of Eudora is 5.1. I am running OSX1.2 on the Mac. On the linux machine, I am running SuSE 8.1, just installed last week. This is very annoying and prevents me from not using the Mac, but relying on the LInux machine, as was my plan.

That last sentence is confusing. I want to stop using my mac and rely solely
on the Linux machine, but cannot because of this bug.

Is the body of the message really missing? Or does KMail just not
display the message body? Have a look at the message source with
View->View Source to find out what is the case.

 Nothing.

On Sunday 03 November 2002 5:54 am, you wrote:

OK. I checked out the message with view>veiw source with a right click on the
body. A window popped up with the entire message. The message had an
attachment that was a word document and it was all gibberish.

Now what? Do I have to view these messages with that technique, burdensome,
or is their some setting that I don't have right?

Does the message only consist of this attachment?

Hi Blake,

Basically I think the problem is Eudora allows you to have an
HTML-formatted signature even if you're not sending an HTML-formatted
e-mail message. When looking at the message source for stuff from Ann
and Howard, the only difference was that Howard's signature was
text-only. But this is a shortcoming in kmail (even the most recent
one, which is what I was using for the test).

Since most e-mail clients now-a-days do allow people to have
HTML-formatted signatures, it probably is worthwhile to investigate
other options (since this very well may happen again with someone
else). Two good programs for Linux and Solaris are Mozilla (1.0.1 or
later) and Ximian's Evolution. Actually both come with the latest Red
Hat, so if you were thinking about upgrading your box at some point it
would be pretty painless to try them out.

The university I work for uses Eudora 5.1 as its standard email client. I have
th e same problem with KMail and attachments in that the message is completely
blank, even though there should be a message and attachment. This only happens
occasionally. Most of the people who send the faulty messages do have html
signatures, although I don't know if all do.

The email has the correct size as if it did have an attachment, and the source
simply has a heap of gibberish. If I move the email to the drafts folder and
double click on it it comes up with a size of "0B" and a type of "/" with no
name and no encoding (in the attachments listing) even though the email states
that its size if 1.2Mb for example.

This only seems to happen with messages sent by Eudora. The following link has
a suggested fix from the Eudora end.
