Result: App menu hangs intermittently rather than smoothly displaying each app group as the cursor glides over it. I can't reproduce this, flicking through the sumbenus for a minute or so and no notable slowdowns. Can you try reproducing the issue with "journalctl --follow" open in a terminal to see if there are any relevant error messages being printed at the same time the issue happens?

The errors from the first one I get as well. Second one looks like something crashed on your system but DrKonqi can't find the metadata. Maybe try with `coredumpctl`. I don't think it's relevant to this though.

I noticed a new error type. This was after installing the latest available update (sudo pacman -Syu) just now. Can reproduce on my system, FWIW. There isn't a total hang, but I can get the cursor position to de-synchronize from what menu is being shown fairly easily just by rapidly moving up and down. This isn't a sensible thing to actually do of course. But it does seem to indicate that there's an opportunity for optimization here.
It's gotten worse. Plasma now locks up. Config file damaged? I'm gonna try remaking the panel.

This is likely unrelated to the slowness that Nate is talking about. This doesn't look good: kwin_wayland_drm: The main thread was hanging temporarily! Unfortunately there's nothing I can immediately help you with here - it might be related to bug 499913 where some people also get this message.
Removing the panel seems to help(?)... I'll see how things improve after panel recreation.

Switched to X11, disabled my integrated display, switched to the external one and black screen. I am now confident now that something somewhere is damagedon my system.
Reinstalled my system. Plasma is no longer crapping its pants. Definitely some file getting altered in a way it shouldn't have. I uninstalled an unofficial theme I had tried to add. I think that may have been the cause of the issue... If something was left in an altered state even after uninstallation
Issue with kicker updating slowly in general is now tracked in bug 500696.
