Description Poper 2025-01-30 08:23:21 UTC
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Download and install VLC Media Player (latest version) from the official website.
Launch the VLC app from the Applications folder or Dock.
Observe that VLC crashes within a few seconds without any error message.
OBSERVED RESULT
VLC crashes upon startup without displaying any UI. Occasionally, a macOS crash report appears stating, "VLC quit unexpectedly."

EXPECTED RESULT
VLC should open normally and allow users to play media files without crashing.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
macOS Version: Sonoma 14.2.1
VLC Version: 3.0.18 (latest stable)
Mac Model: MacBook Pro (M1, 2021)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Running VLC via Terminal (/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC) results in the following error:
yaml

Segmentation fault: 11
Issue persists even after reinstalling VLC and resetting preferences.
Disabling macOS Gatekeeper (sudo spctl --master-disable) does not resolve the issue.
The problem started occurring after the Sonoma update; VLC worked fine on macOS Ventura.
Possible Workarounds Tried
✅ Reinstalling VLC – No effect
✅ Resetting VLC Preferences – No effect
✅ Running VLC in Rosetta Mode – No effect
✅ Trying Older VLC Versions – Works, but not ideal
