Do you mean clicking the pencil icon next to "Editor font" in Settings->Configure Kate->Appearance->General tab?
For me, this opens the font dialog without any issues

yes, When I clicked on that icon, my kate crashed straight away, and I remember the bug from at least a month ago with the daily build
