Screenshot of issue (black area on my machine is shown as white in screenshot)

SUMMARY
Not sure if this is machine specific, but I've been able to repro consistently on my X1 Carbon 12gen with Kubuntu 24.10. When turning off "Lock after waking from sleep" in the screen locking settings, but setting the laptop to "Sleep" on closing the lid, the system will lose all the shell and KDE stuff when resuming (black desktop, no taskbar, etc.) but if I change things back to "Lock after waking" then the screens come back (after unlocking of course). It doesn't seem like a crash because I can change the setting back, close the lid, and reopen and it will fix itself if the setting is turned on.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Turn off "Lock after waking from sleep"
2. Set lid behavior in Power Management to "When laptop lid is closed" = "Sleep"
3. Close lid and reopen

OBSERVED RESULT
Applications that were open are still visible, but all the KDE stuff is gone (taskbar, etc.)

EXPECTED RESULT
Normal KDE stuff should still be there.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Kubuntu 24.10

Manufacturer: LENOVO

System Version: ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
As mentioned above, turning the setting back on seems to resolve this issue.
Using sleep from the gear menu does NOT exhibit this issue, only closing the lid.
Filing this under screen locking as the issue only exhibits when screen locking is turned off, but feel free to request a different place for this if you see fit.

Screenshot shows white, but it's really black in those spots.

Cannot reproduce on current git master. Does it happen to you on X11 too? Or only on Wayland?

Hi Nate, first of all thanks for looking into this. Is there a good way for me to know whether I'm on X11 or Wayland and switch between them? Sorry, I'm not very up to speed on the modern window managers / Wayland vs. X11 - most of my experience in configuring / messing about with X is from many years ago.

If you want to provide some steps you want me to do to check things, feel free - I'll do my best to do some digging based on your recommendations.

The Info Center app will tell you on the front page, beside "Graphics Platform".

Have the exact same bug. So this should be reproducible - have read same complaint on Reddit repeatedly - all of the complaints seem to be happening in a Wayland context.

I’m having the very similar issue i.e. the same results - disappearing plasma, but the different cause: for me it is happening only when I have an usb-connected external monitor. It happens after waking up from sleep or just unlocking locked desktop (with "lock after waking from sleep" enabled). Unplugging and connecting the monitor again fixes the issue instantly. Happy to help resolve the issue, let me know how can I help.

I also have this bug, but only on my external screen, never the internal one. Sometimes also when I connect the external screen, totally unrelated to sleep. Disconnecting and reconnecting the external screen helped every time, but is a bit of an annoying workaround.
