Description tuxaddict 2024-11-30 20:19:42 UTC
SUMMARY
The widget: /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.notes does “freeze” after the first reboot or log off and on after “installing” it on a vertical side panel. It is still possible to copy and paste text, change the size, open the context menu, but it is not accepting keystrokes anymore, and the blend in options (bold/italic etc.) are not shown anymore.

More obervations in this KDE Discuss thread:
https://discuss.kde.org/t/sticky-notes-widget-freezes-caused-by-binding-loop-in-scrollview-qml/25760

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Add the widget to a vertical panel
2. Add text on it
3. Reboot once, or log off an back in more than once

OBSERVED RESULT
1. Notes field get's unresponsive to keystrokes
2, Bottom menu (font formats)

EXPECTED RESULT
1. Keystrokes should be accepted and wrote as text
2. Bottom menu (font formatting) should be present

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Linux 6.11.0-9-generic #9-Ubuntu, (K)Ubuntu 24.10
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.6.0
Qt Version: 6.6.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I found an error in the logs, from which i'm not certain if it is related to this bug:
plasmashell[1784]: file:///usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.notes/contents/ui/main.qml:155:13: QML ScrollView: Binding loop detected for property "rightPadding"

And an "general" error, which i thought may be related:
plasmashell[6317]: qrc:/qt/qml/org/kde/plasma/components/ScrollView.qml:45:27: QML ScrollBar: Binding loop detected for property "visible"

More info can be found in the KDE Discuss thread. I tested the bug on another machine, with:
Operating System: KDE neon 6.2
KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.8.0
Qt Version: 6.8.0
Kernel Version: 6.8.0-48-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

where the error did not occur, although the observated error messages listed above, where present as well.
Thank you for your work and this great software!

Hmm, I've used a Notes widget in my vertical panel for years now and never encountered this issue. Can you attach a screen recording that shows it happening? Thanks a lot!

Thank's for your reply! i recently tested the potential bug on another install of kubuntu, same specs as listed above (24.10, 6.1.5, 6.6.0, 6.6.2) with the same result, although it worked under KDE neon on plasma 6.2.3. So, would be interesting if you, with your working side panel notes, are on the same environment.

sure, i will make a screenrecord anss upload it.

screenrecord attached. btw, again unbelievable that KDE has a screenrecord option for obly a defined part of the desktop with spectacle on board. KDE is amazing!

1. i did set up a fresh side panel with notes
2. i show that it does function by adding text
3. i restart plasma
4. the pad is not editable anymore, and the truetype menu (bold, italic etc.) is gone
