Created attachment 176216 [details] Screenshot showing the affected setting and the tiny cursor size SUMMARY The maximum cursor sizes for many cursor themes are quite small. This is in my own experience an accessibility problem since the cursor can be legit hard to see, especially what shape it is which defies the point of a varied cursor theme. Interestingly, the display settings DPI scaler *does* affect the cursor size, making it seem like all the handling to scale up the cursor is already in place. All the system settings would need to do is to always provide an additional 1.5x, 2x, 3x size of the largest size of a cursor theme that will simply scale it up. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Pick a cursor theme with a single size 2. It can't be scaled up, despite cursor scaling seemingly being available in Wayland as a functionality. See screenshot, no other sizes available. OBSERVED RESULT It's not possible to choose a larger cursor size that simply scales up the image. EXPECTED RESULT I can always pick a larger cursor size that will then simply scale up the image, preferably without any blurry image filters. There also seems to be a possible bug with cursor sizes in general, since in XWayland applications the cursor seems to be 1.5x the size which looks way more natural. Also I have a second machine with an older version of Plasma 6 where it also looks larger. So perhaps the cursor is generally smaller than it should be due to some other compounding issue, but nevertheless larger synthetic cursor sizes would always be useful to have.
Cursor theme needs to support larger sizes for you to increase the cursor size. Please report this to the cursor theme developers. You can try to use Breeze or some other cursor theme which have the size you want.
Since Wayland already scales the cursor in so many places, why couldn't there just be an upscaler? I'm a little lost about that one, it seems like it might be somewhat straightforward to add and a lot of cursor themes don't seem to bother with higher scales, especially the retro kind. Getting them all to change seems somewhat like a lost battle. Anyway, I realize it's fully up to you, I'm just hoping you reconsider.
I can't really talk about this in depth because I don't really know this very well to put it in my own words so it's better to link other sources. This really is on the theme to create larger icon sizes. Here are 2 great blogs explaining how cursors work https://blogs.kde.org/2024/10/09/cursor-size-problems-in-wayland-explained/ https://planet.kde.org/vlad-zahorodnii-2024-10-06-svg-cursors-everything-that-you-need-to-know-about-them/
The first blog post sounds like cursor sizes are a problem today, but might be fixed tomorrow. In that case, why couldn't cursor scaling with a user setting be readded? It seems like for accessibility this would be kind of an important feature. Sorry if I'm just wasting your time and what I'm suggesting makes no sense, I'm for sure not an expert.
(A small side that I forgot: especially pixelated retro pixel cursors, like old Windows or Amiga cursors, are most likely never going to switch to an SVG format since that seems somewhat unnatural. I'm not saying it's technically impossible to embed such bitmaps in SVG, but rather that I don't think many theme creator will think to do so just for better accessibility.)
