Description Mike H 2024-11-07 17:52:56 UTC
KDE powerdevil seems to only have 2 states that are mutually exclusive:

Lock screen when laptop lid closed
OR
Turn off screen when laptop lid closed
BUT NOT BOTH AT THE SAME TIME

Why?

When I close the screen I immediately want BOTH to occur. Lock, and turn off screen.
Why is this not a setting option?

There are workarounds "use xset dpms force off in a notifications menu when the screen locks" "use dbus-send to do it in wayland"

WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR A WORKAROUND?!

Every other OS, and DE for Linux seem to get this right, if you don't have them automatically suspend. And when I'm charging my laptop I don't want automatic suspend.

Sure you can: on the Energy Management page, configure it so that closing the laptop lid puts the system to sleep, and then on the Screen Locking page, configure it to lock when waking from sleep.

In fact, what I described above is what the system is configured to do by default. So if this is not working for you, then either you or your distro changed those settings, or else there is a bug preventing something from working as expected.

You missed the actual state I want:
Screen Off; Locked; AWAKE.

In that case, set the system to lock when closing the lid, and set a short timeout for turning off the screen while locked, like 10 seconds or something. That way the screen will end up locked, and very quickly turn off, but the system won't go to sleep.
