Proper panel alignment before launching an application not in icon only task manager

SUMMARY

When putting a panel in vertical mode and adding an icon only task manager, selecting fill free space (or adding an expandable spacer), and adding a widget to the bottom of the panel, the alignment of the widget gets messed up after launching an application that is not pinned to the icon only task manager.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Create vertical panel
2. Add an icon only task manager to the top of the panel
3. Select "fill free space" option
4. Add a widget (such as launcher) to bottom of panel
5. Launch an application not pinned to the icon only task manager

OBSERVED RESULT

The widget on the bottom of the panel gets pushed mostly off the screen.

EXPECTED RESULT

The widget alignment does not change and the widget stays properly aligned.

I can't reproduce this issue on current git master with Qt 6.8.0 on Fedora KDE 41. What version of Plasma are you using, and on what distro?

Plasma Info for Bug
Comment 4 Paul Martin 2024-11-17 22:36:35 UTC
I'm running OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and it has been an issue for me on two different computers and architectures since Plasma 6.1. (I did not try out 6.0). Can still reproduce as of today. This is only in the Wayland session. I'm happy to get you any info you need. Just let me know what would be helpful.

Note that the attached screenshot is from my M2 Max MacBook Pro but I can still reproduce on my Ryzen 5950X system as well.

P.S. I've been following your blog for the past two years, at least. I look forward to your updates every week. Thank you for all you do for the community.

You're welcome! Unfortunately I'm having a hard time reproducing this issue. I assume it only reproduces when you already have a horizontal top panel and then later create the vertical panel, right? I did try that but couldn't make it happen.

Could you supply complete instructions starting from a default desktop and panel setup?
