Description maxlefou 2024-11-03 08:39:25 UTC
SUMMARY
KDE boots with the first screen of the first desktop in pitch black without rendering the wallpaper or the widgets. Right click is not responsive either. Though, the eventual bars and their contents are rendering and working. The problem occurs randomly and the only temporary fix is to logout and login again. Most of the time it works, but it might require a second logout/login at rare times.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Boot on KDE (with automatic login)

OBSERVED RESULT
The first desktop of the first screen might be pitch black with only the bars rendering as well as their content. Wallpaper and widgets aren't appearing and right-click doesn't work.

EXPECTED RESULT
The first desktop of the main screen should work the same way at every boot.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma:
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.6.0
Qt Version: 6.7.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
When comparing a session with the bug and one without, I notice the following error in journald when it occurs and I suspect it's related:
kwin_core: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: ####, resource id: 23068706, major code: 129 (SHAPE), minor code: 3 (Combine)
It appears 4 times with a different sequence number: 1770, 1771, 1789, 1790

Sorry if it has been posted already. I've searched about it but found nothing. Also sorry for the lack of information, as i'm not a dev, but i'm willing to give you more infos if you give me directions.

If you press alt+space for krunner does that open as expected and is it on the black screen?

I've noticed that, if autologin is disabled and that I manually login to KDE, the problem seems to occur less. It's been 3 days since I didn't get it. So I definitely suspect autologin to mess something up.

As for krunner, i'll try when/if the problem reappears.

Ok forget what I said last time. Even with autologin disabled, the problem can occur... It reduces the occurrence but it still can happen...

I tried your suggestion and yes, krunner still appears as intended on the black screen.

Also, I just noticed I forgot to mention:

I use Nvidia with drivers 550.120 and I'm on X11. Haven't tested on Wayland due to Wayland being too terrible with Nvidia GPU.
