STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Had 8.2.0, upgraded, would not start. Reverted to 8.3.0, tried to do face recognition, hung and never finished. I suppose I'll go back to 8.2.0

Problem is probably solved in digiKam 8.5.0 pre-release installer:

Gilles, thanks so much for the response. So far, 8.5.0 does not have the problems I experienced with 8.3.0 and 8.4.0.
