Description Paul 2024-09-16 16:24:07 UTC
When using a Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 monitor (240 Hz) with an AMD 6950 XT GPU on Arch Linux KDE Plasma (version 6.1.5):

- X11 Session: After login, animations are initially limited to 60 Hz. Attaching any window to the grid using the new tiling feature resolves the issue, and animations run smoothly at 240 Hz for the rest of the session.

- Wayland Session: Animations are consistently stuck at 60 Hz, and the workaround from the X11 session does not apply.

Different display settings were tried, but the issue persists.

I'm a software dev myself so if you need any additional data or want me to try a patch or something, it's all possible.

------------

I commented this initially in bug #455585 but was told to rather open a new bug for it.

Same issue here. I have commented other bugs related to not smooth effects, however, I think this is a very accurate description. I just have this problem with Overview, Present Windows and Desktop Grid effects and it is replicable in X11 and Wayland (in fact is replicable since Plasma 5), but as it is described in X11 with just snaping a window, alt-tab, etc, the issue is solved until a new reboot is performed. Not the case in wayland where I've not found any workaround.
Additionally, I have two 144 hz monitors and a laptop with a 60 hz screen. Effects looks perfect in the laptop monitor, but not in the high refresh screens (in a TV at 60 hz also looks great).

I tested with two monitors at 60hz both and all the effects have the same feeling, but once I configure one of the monitors to 144 hz, it can be noticed that the effects looks amazing for almost all the effects, except by those three mentioned above. And yes, I realized that those 3 effects at 144hz looks the same than at 60hz.

Can confirm. The overall refresh rate is not affected by this, only some animations lock to 60 Hz.

There's a potential fix for this in BUG 485927

Just to make it official, with the Patch from bug 485927 comment 10 I have a butter smooth experience on my 240 Hz monitor on both Wayland and X11.

Thanks for testing! Didn't mean to close the issue without giving you a chance to respond :)
