Unable to open any applications via KRunner or Application Menu STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Open KRunner (I have it set to Super key, so I just press that) or Application Menu 2. Select any application OBSERVED RESULT The application never opens. Instead, a notification appears: (This is for System Settings, but applies to all other applications too) "Launching System Settings ( FAILED) Unit app-systemsettings@f180edeaac9241a8819855ecc5090879.service not found. " EXPECTED RESULT Application should open QUIRKS I will add, this is intermittent. Whenever I log on to a new session, for at least a minute opening apps will work fine. Then maybe sometimes the issue will arise. Sometimes it's fine. I'll get the issue maybe like 1-3 times per day. When it happens it usually only lasts like half an hour or so and then goes back to working fine. Does launching apps via pinned Task Manager entries or launchers dragged to the desktop also not work when the system is in this state?
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #2) > Does launching apps via pinned Task Manager entries or launchers dragged to > the desktop also not work when the system is in this state? Currently in this broken state, no cannot opened any pinned task manager entries from Icons only task manager widget, application menu widget, or the desktop. I can still use the system overall though, as I have Konsole open, and can launch any app from the command line. Don't know if it's related or anything, also noticed when I was editing the icons only task manager, the configuration window opened up fine. Seems like it's just opening applications through plasma. Out of curiousity, also looked up how to launch desktop files, and was able to do `gtk-launch org.kde.konsole.desktop` in the command line without any issues. It's just launching applications graphically.
sounds like your systemd may be having trouble. run `sudo systemctl log-level debug` then run `journalctl -f > /tmp/journallog` then try to start something then attach the file /tmp/journallog to this bug report. Also you could run `QT_LOGGING_RULES="org.kde.*=true;kf*=true" kioclient exec https://kde.org/reusable-assets/home-blur.jpg` and attach its output.
I don't know how to add attachments? Anyways, here's the journalctl log: > File: /tmp/journallog > Sep 06 00:27:36 MABGaruda systemd[1]: varlink-92: Sending message: {"error":"io.systemd.UserDatabase.NoRecordFound","parameters":{}} > Sep 06 00:27:36 MABGaruda systemd[1]: varlink-92: Changing state processing-method-more → processed-method > Sep 06 00:27:36 MABGaruda systemd[1]: varlink-92: Changing state processed-method → idle-server > Sep 06 00:27:36 MABGaruda systemd[1]: varlink-92: Got POLLHUP from socket. > Sep 06 00:27:36 MABGaruda systemd[1]: varlink-92: Changing state idle-server → pending-disconnect > Sep 06 00:27:36 MABGaruda systemd[1]: varlink-92: Changing state pending-disconnect → processing-disconnect > Sep 06 00:27:36 MABGaruda systemd[1]: varlink-92: Changing state processing-disconnect → disconnected > Sep 06 00:27:36 MABGaruda sudo[130432]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session closed for user root > Sep 06 00:27:42 MABGaruda systemd[1]: systemd-timesyncd.service: Got notification message from PID 683 (WATCHDOG=1) > Sep 06 00:27:43 MABGaruda systemd[1]: systemd-udevd.service: Got notification message from PID 491 (WATCHDOG=1) > Sep 06 00:27:57 MABGaruda krunner[5472]: kf.kio.gui: Failed to launch process as service: "app-systemsettings@eb4c47e80cab4dde8c83ec347f439291.service" "org.freedesktop.systemd1.NoSuchUnit" "Unit app-systemsettings@eb4c47e80cab4dde8c83ec347f439291.service not found." > Sep 06 00:27:57 MABGaruda systemd[1]: systemd-journald.service: Got notification message from PID 453 (WATCHDOG=1) > Sep 06 00:27:57 MABGaruda rtkit-daemon[1934]: Supervising 4 threads of 4 processes of 1 users. > Sep 06 00:27:57 MABGaruda rtkit-daemon[1934]: Supervising 4 threads of 4 processes of 1 users. > Sep 06 00:27:59 MABGaruda systemd[1]: systemd-oomd.service: Got notification message from PID 682 (WATCHDOG=1) > Sep 06 00:27:59 MABGaruda plasmashell[4809]: kf.windowsystem: static void KX11Extras::forceActiveWindow(WId, long int) may only be used on X11 > Sep 06 00:28:02 MABGaruda plasmashell[4809]: kf.kio.gui: Failed to launch process as service: "app-org.kde.konsole@af36f51417de4b4ebeddc2f582812bfb.service" "org.freedesktop.systemd1.NoSuchUnit" "Unit app-org.kde.konsole@af36f51417de4b4ebeddc2f582812bfb.service not found." I've discovered that trying to open an appimage in this broken state freezes (and crashes?) plasma (have to restart afterwards). Launching appimage from command line is find though. Also sometimes it's weirdly conditional, gtk apps like firedragon (derivative of floorp browser, which is a derivative of firefox) and qt/kde apps can start normally, and electron apps can't start. Sometimes it's all applications though.
So after plasma 6.2, it went away for a while, and then came back. I've noticed some patterns: it tends to happen more when using the linux-zen kernel rather then the linux-lts kernel. Also just had it happen right now in the middle of a session, after I tried exporting an image from Inkscape. YAYYYY! After more research finally came across this: https://forum.garudalinux.org/t/cant-start-any-app/37635/34 tmpfs was getting filled up, and seems like in general was only a problem on the garuda-linux distro. What I don't get is why this only seemed to happen on Plasma and not Hyprland, but who knows. After clearing tmpfs, everything works again!
Sorry to have bothered all of yall awesome KDE folks! Love everything amazing y'all do, and thanks for any previous help! Solution was posted here, in case anyone comes across this in the future: https://forum.garudalinux.org/t/cant-start-any-app/37635/36.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
