SUMMARY

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a PDF in Okular that was installed using apt-get or the Ubuntu GUI software installer.
2. Locate Okular menu tools to read a page or full document.
3. Click either "read page" or "read document"

OBSERVED RESULT
1. No audio. Check sound settings, sound is assigned to speakers. Try other tool. No audio.
2. Open Okular settings, Accessibility section.
3. Note that "mock" is the only option for speech engine, despite "speechd" already being installed and running.

EXPECTED RESULT
1. Okular speaks the text (full document or page only per command selected)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Please be kind to a disabled grad student who may not have correctly followed all expected protocols for this bug report. I have a lot of PDFs to grok and it would really help if Okular's speak text tool functioned.

Unfortunately we do not really have much control over what ubuntu ships.

I understand possibly you need to install some other package that provides the speak functionality, but I have no idea.

I have two suggestions for you.

1) try https://discuss.kde.org/ to see if someone with Ubuntu expertise can help you figure out which extra packages you need to install

2) try installing okular from flathub https://flathub.org/apps/org.kde.okular If speak functionality does not work there, please file a bug .... and i just realized there's also a bug in https://github.com/flathub/org.kde.okular/issues/73

I apologize for all of this being very broken :/
