When idling, the plasmashell process uses 9-10 % CPU (on a relatively powerfull desktop machine), causing higher than usual temperatures and energy usage. I do not recall observing this in Plasma 5. I'm currently on X11, I have a dual-monitor set-up, and I have several system monitor widgets on my desktop, in case this is relevant. SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Linux/KDE Plasma: KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.3 KDE Frameworks Version: 6.4 Qt Version: 6.7.2
Does it reproduce in a new clean user account with no customizations?
I haven't tried a clean user account, but on a second machine (laptop, X11, dual-monitor, no widgets on the desktop) I don't see high CPU usage. I can try adding some system monitor widgets there and see what happens.
Apologies, my last statement was incorrect: I had system monitor set to show unscaled CPU load on the desktop and scaled CPU load on the laptop. Using unscaled CPU load on the laptop, I also see plasmashell using 9-10 % CPU in idle without any widgets on the desktop and without anything else that needs to be constantly updated in the panel. I can increase the CPU load by adding system monitor widgets to the desktop.
If you're using a panel in auto-hide mode, you might want to read into #487895.
I'm not using auto-hiding and I've disabled floating.
