Description UnknownFella 2024-08-07 14:22:45 UTC
SUMMARY:
It's a visual glitch on wayland and X11 when I move windows or resize them and it happens on both monitors equally. The glitch is as you can see in the attached gif but it varies. They can show an older frame of a window on the whole screen or just a smaller random part of it. There can be a black screen, mostly encountered on steam or flickering as well. Usually the glitch persists until you move the cursor on the glitching window or a different window on top of the one glitching.
The visual glitch is not present from the moment I boot my system but it happens progressively over time and it stays until restart or re-log.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
There are no steps, it just naturally happens after some use.

OBSERVED RESULT:
Windows visualy glitching.

EXPECTED RESULT:
The glitch should not be present.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS:
Linux/KDE Plasma: Garuda Linux Dragonized Gaming Edition
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.1.0

Kernel Version: 6.10.3-zen1-2

HARDWARE:
GPU: AMD RX 6700 XT 12GB
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core
RAM: 16GB

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This specific glitch has been presents since Kde Plasma version 6.0.0

Hi,

it seems you forgot to attach the gif.

Moving to kwin for further investigation.

Cannot reproduce with current git master. Do you have an NVIDIA GPU? Does it reproduce with only one screen too?

Could you provide a screenshot or a video link that doesn't 404 by now? Do the glitches look similar to bug 491738 maybe?

I think this time it wont get removed/deleted after some time.
My glitch looks similar to bug 491738 but in my case it happens on inactive windows.

Okay, that looks familiar - I've seen it happen recently on my laptop as well. Just trying to debug it, it went away immediately though.
How often does it happen for you?

In my case it happens everyday. Its part of my life now hah. It starts happening some time after booting the OS and wont go away without restarting or re-loging. I dont know if there are specific triggers but will try and monitor and see if I can find anything.

Is Bug 491827 the same thing?
Comment 12 Nate Graham 2024-09-03 19:23:42 UTC
Also Bug 486280.

Bug 491827 is close to mine. Mine does the same "window acting like Ms Paint eraser" effect but its usually a glitched out window instead of a black background.

Bug 486280 doesn't look like something I encountered.

Does this still happen if you put KWIN_USE_BUFFER_AGE=0 into /etc/environment and reboot?

Nothing's changed.
But I think I found out that it happens after the screen turns off. I am not sure if it is specifically caused by this but twice now it started happening after the screen turned off and I turned it back on by mouse or key.
