Application Menu sluggish and sometimes broken entries

SUMMARY
If you move the mouse very fast through the categories sometimes the size of the subcategory popups changes to too big with empty space below or that the popup will be cut off. Also because of that the Application Menu is not very smooth when hovering over the entries icons will be (for half a second or so) misplaced, missing or icons from the previous subcategory will be shown.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Click on a main category with a lot of entries and then fast move the cursor back to another main category.

OBSERVED RESULT
1. If you move the cursor to fast the subcategory will be expanded with empty space.
2. If you do it several times the subcategory will not expanded but cut off

EXPECTED RESULT
The size of the (sub)categories should be neither extended nor cut off.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: openSUSE Tumbleweed / KDE Plasma 6.0.5
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.2.0
Qt Version: 6.7.1

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I added some screenshots of the issue.

The empty space part might be fixed in Plasma 6.1 since I can't repro the issue exactly like you do, but there is something I can spot

1. Open a category with item that has really long name for an app
2. Right below or above it, open a category that has no app that has such a long name
3. The width of the long name app is used even its not needed.

Operating System: Fedora Linux 40
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.80
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.4.0
Qt Version: 6.7.1
Kernel Version: 6.8.11-300.fc40.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor
Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 6600

I'll set this as confirmed. There is big likelihood that some values do not reset when opening and closing the menus.

Screencast

Hi Akseli,

Sorry for my late response I was abroad for quite some time (and I forgot to mention that my system is also all AMD).
I just updated my system to the newest Plasma version and all the issue are still present. I added a short screencast as an attachment (A video is worth a thousand words).

No worries! Thanks for the video, it really helps. I'll see if I can reproduce this again with following the video.

Also, good taste in games! :)

I was able to reproduce this today on git-master

1. Use Application Menu for the app launcher
2. Mouse over any category that has only one or two entries. On my system, I used the Lost & Found category (I was unable to reproduce with other categories). On my system there is only one item. The height of the background is appropriate at this point
3. Move the pointer over a category with more items like Graphics
4. Move the pointer over the favorite icons at the left, and then into Lost & Found / your chosen category (This doesn't always trigger the bug, I had to do this a few times to see it again)

Thank you for the bug report! You have several issues in this report. The icons not updating quickly enough is being tracked separately in bug 483665.

I'm forward-duping the main issue (popups too large/small) to bug 503582, as it has very compact reproduction steps.
