SUMMARY

I have Manjaro Linux with KDE. I used to have KDE 5.x on X11 until now.

I ran the system updates widget and selected all available updates to install, as I normally do every once in a while, and apparently KDE was upgraded to 6, without any special warning.

When the upgrades got installed, I got some errors when upgrading a package called "krunner5" which I have no idea what it is. I tried re-running the update but it would keep failing. Apparently the package that were left to be installed/upgraded were: krunner5, Google Chrome and visual-studio-code-bin.

After this I rebooted.
I got an unfamiliar login screen, where there was a selector on the top-left between "KDE (X11)" and "KDE (Wayland)". I selected Wayland.

I got prompted to choose select a multi-screen configuration, as I was doing all this with the laptop lid closed and with the external display connected (which is how I always use my computer), so I chose "switch to external monitor".

And now my screen looks like this: see the attached PHOTO. Yes a PHOTO because the keyboard shortcut to take screenshots no longer works.

All the icons in the task manager are broken and none of them work.

Even the launcher doesn't work: I type "Chrome" in it and it doesn't find Google Chrome. I had to launch Chrome from a Terminal (which I ran by using Ctrl+Alt+T which fortunately worked).

As you can see the desktop is black: not only there is no background image, but also none of the files and shortcuts.

The shortcut to take screenshots doesn't work.

It seems that I can run all the applications that I usually use by launching them from a terminal assuming I know the name or path of the executable, but that is not always the case.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. install available updates through Pamac

OBSERVED RESULT

utter and complete chaos

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Comment 1 php4fan 2024-05-18 18:00:53 UTC
After several minutes, without doing anything, the icons in the Task manager somehow finally appeared and seem to work, and the launcher also seems to work normally. Also the shortcut for taking screenshots, and Alt+Tab, have started working.

The desktop is still black, though.

Based on the screenshot, I would suspect a bad update from the distro. Please report future issues in the form of "I updated the system and all hell broke loose" to the distro, not KDE.
