Description alexandru.pentilescu 2024-05-01 19:50:32 UTC
SUMMARY

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install the KDE Spin of Fedora Linux 40
2. Set the wallpaper to the Hunyango wallpaper
3. Also install glmark2 from the repos
4. Run glmark2

OBSERVED RESULT
Running glmark2 allowed me to notice that, for whatever reason, my desktop freezes every minute or so for 1-2 seconds, for no apparent reason. The freezing feels completely random, and it's subtle but it's definitely there. Pay attention to the glmark2 animation and you will see it.

EXPECTED RESULT
There should be no freezing whatsoever.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: KDE Spin of Fedora 40
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.0.0
Qt Version: 6.6.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Please note that this isn't a plasma 6 specific issue. I believe, although I cannot confirm with 100% certainty, that this has been an issue with KDE Plasma 5 as well.
Also, please note that this is NOT a glmark2 bug, as the freezing affects the entire interface. Installing glmark is not necessary to reproduce this bug, it just makes it very apparent and easy to notice.
Playing video games without also makes this issue highly noticeable

Thanks for the bug report. I'm sorry we weren't able to get to this yet. There have been many fixes and improvements, in Plasma since 6.0.3, and this issue may have been fixed. I'm not able to reproduce the issue with git-master. In particular, there have been improvements to reducing full screen paints and cpu usage.

Can you please re-test on your system with Plasma 6.3.4 or later and let us know if you can still reproduce the problem? Thanks!

I cannot reproduce the issue anymore either. It could very well be that the issue has been fixed in the meantime, as you have said already, but I also changed my graphics card since I've opened this ticket, which could also have been the reason why it stopped happening.

So, with regards to what caused this, I cannot say for certain. The original issue was produced on a Radeon 5700 XT graphics card, if it's of any value knowing that.

Since the problem doesn't happen anymore on my end, feel free to close this ticket if you believe there's any value in continuing to investigate this

Thanks for the followup. It's great to hear that things are working on your current system. I'll close this out since the bug is no longer reproducible. If you have any other issues, please file a new report. Thanks!
