Version: (using KDE Devel) Installed from: Compiled sources The Crystal splash screen status icons have next to nothing to do with what's going on. A globe to represent peripherals? A folder to represent the panel? Seems quite random to me. Here are a few suggestions for alternatives: 1) "devices/nfs_unmount" for "Setting up interprocess communication" 2) "devices/mouse" for "Peripherals" 3) "apps/window_list" for "Loading the window manager" 4) "filesystems/desktop" for "Loading the desktop" I'm stuck when it comes to alternatives to the panel and system services

I agree that the icons should be more symbolic of the messages. I looked through the icons and it appears that we don't yet have suitable icons for all of them. The same problem (therefore) occurs in the Control Center. -- JRT
REGRESSION: KDE_3_2_BRANCH The desktop is in the wrong position again. -- JRT
In KDE 3.2.2 (contributed RPMs for SuSE 9.0) the icons are still misleading: - "Peripherals" is still a globe icon. - as noted in the REGRESSION comment, the desktop icon is being displayed for "window manager" and the terminal icon is displayed for "desktop". - "Panel" is still a folder icon. How about using the K-gear icon for "panel", since the panel has a K-gear menu button on it? Using the folder icon for "restoring session" wouldn't be so bad.

sorry but your fix gets garbled at this end...can you send a screen shot first?

I have now gotten back to this. BugZilla was down when I first read your mail. You might need to rename the file to: <whatever>tar.bz2 to get Ark to open it. I downloaded it and did that and it opens correctly. It contains: Preview.png splash_active_bar.png splash_inactive_bar.png for both themes as a TAR to unpack in the "kdebase" directory. -- JRT

Attachments 7465 and 7466 are inconsistent in their positions for the K-gear, planet, wrench, and console icons. That can't be right.
Look at the originals in the source tree: kdebase/ksplashml/pics/themes/blue-bend/Preview.png kdebase/ksplashml/pics/themes/default/Preview.png -- JRT
I'd say that the originals are wrong, too. That's how this thread started...
I very recently booted up my laptop with Mdv Cooker and KDE 3.5.1 with the default ksplash screen to great Oohs and Aahs from friends, it is is a truly beautiful thing. And then one observant lady asked me the meaning of the different icons at the bottom of the splash -- I fudged but honestly in my heart did not have a decent answer. Looking at it again later I honestly have to say there is no real correspondence between what is happening on my booting box and the flashing of icons. For that reason alone those icons should be dropped. Replace with an animation or flash movie of Sparky the KDE dragon mascot as a 20-something young adult doing something kinda cute, lively and smart and against a light rock music track?
Created attachment 15129 [details] My splash icon bar I didn't like the icons so I made my own splash screen icons that somewhat correspond to what is being said. The first two could use be a little better but I only use existing art work (with minor changes).
Six years, 120,000 bugs, and a new major version of KDE have rolled by. Let's close this WONTFIX.
While this bug is not relevant to KDE4, KDE3 is still open for bug fixes, so the question is whether or not we want to fix this.
weah close it... i see this splash screnn as somthing to entertain the user wille kde is booting, hevenif the icons wre a litle bit more meeningfull to what was going on in the system it may varie alot from distro to distro, this is just some animation bit made to make the wayting a bit mre plesent.... and provide the its loading information...
No longer applicable to Plasma 5 with Breeze icons.
