SUMMARY The "Updates available" icon shows in the systemtray and has 4 context menu entries: Open Discover, Show updates, Update, Close (translated from german locale). Clicking any other entry does what it says. Only "Update" doesnt actually update the system. Journalctl shows "get-updates transaction /1552_eebbdcbb from uid 1000 finished with success after 511ms" when I click the context entry but not always. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Install Debian stable + KDE 2. Wait for Discover Update systray notifier icon 3. Right click 4. Click Update 5. Seems like a bit of a mistranslation. The english entry is 'Refresh...'. Though I wonder if we can't make that string a bit clearer. "Check for Updates..." maybe
This is a HUGE problem that needs to be fixed. I don't know if the problem is Ubuntu or KDE but the admin setting in a user's profile is no longer working. If have 3 systems running 22.04 LTS. In all of them, the request for authentication while running as an admin user has disappeared. Example: Discover The program retrieves the Updates Hit Update button Nothing happens It used to be that the authentication window would appear, type in password, and proceed This lack of asking for authentication is also in making changes to users, network address -- anything that used to trigger an authentication request. The bug has been present for months. I'm sure it's been logged somewhere else.
One more item. If I click on the systemsettings button the normal icons appear, but again anything requiring authentication does not work. If i type: sudo systemsettings from a terminal, then all additions/changes/deletions can be effected.
Ditto for Discover. Type "sudo plasma-discover" in a terminal window, enter password, and Discover will run as before.
Even for a "Refresh" button, a.k.a. "Check for Updates…" it lacks the feedback, such as showing a progress notification, changing tooltip text to something like "Last time checked at xx:yy", animating/spinning its circular icon (kinda meh without Lottie animations or in case of themable icons).
Maybe the solution here is to utilize headless discover more and open the refresh busy page when the user triggers the refresh action.
The issue is moot most likely. The problem that pervaded the earlier version of Ubuntu is gone in 24.04.
