Description mail+kde 2024-04-08 10:11:52 UTC
SUMMARY
When displaying an E-Mail with kmail, the date shown (from the Date header) is shown wrong in the mail header view because the timezone information is just dropped.

In the Mail List of the folder, the date is shown correctly.

If there is no timezone information displayed, the only valid assumption is that the information displayed is meant to show something in my systems localtime because i have no way of asserting the timezone of the sender from that representation. I will not always know from which timezone a sender sent their email.
In fact, the only way to know that is inspecting the raw headers which is what a MUA should be about not doing in the first place. So that information needs to be shown at least, better would be a rendering in localtime (which is more intuitive i think to most users) or an option for the use to choose from both (or both being displayed simultaneously in some way)

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Have an E-Mail with a Date Header from some Timezone thats not UTC (+ oder - doenst matter) in your mailbox
2. navigate to said mail
3. select it

OBSERVED RESULT
1. The Folder Mail list will display the correct date in your systems localtime based on the the timezone information
2. The mail details display will show the local time of the sender (or, to be specific) of the Date Header) without any Timezone information.

EXPECTED RESULT
Displaying the timezone information should be the minimum. Better would be to render the time in the local time as the mail list does.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: openSuse Tumbleweed 20240403 - Kernel 6.8.2-1-vanilla (64-bit) - X11
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.0.0
Qt Version: 6.6.3

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Thread Theme: "Smart" (But same result with "classic")
Header Theme: "Standard-Grantlee" (but same result with "Dekorativer Vorspann" instead)

Related to Bug #379467 but no duplicate imo as the problem critizised here is the completely missing timezone information. If the aim is to implement the (imo bad) "solution" of #379467, please at least display the Timezone of the sender and show the localtime with a tooltip or something like that

Kind of related to #361441 - at least as I understand the original report of #361441, but definitively not related to what is discussed afterwards and which seems to match the bug report title more than the first comment.
