SUMMARY
The dark window color schemes of Kate are not all that usable in XFCE with Adwaita-Dark. The active document's tab is not easy to distinguish at all, which is the main usability issue, ime. The "symbol outline" button is black with dark background and therefor not very legible. There may be more, but these are the two gui items i've noticed so far.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. click Settings
2. choose any dark Window Color Scheme
3. open multiple documents, leave the window to perform some other task, or run the program in the terminal, and then come back and try to see which tab is the currently edited/selected/highlighted one.

OBSERVED RESULT
I can't tell which tab is highlighted.

EXPECTED RESULT
I should be able to easily see which tab i was editing.

IDK what qt or kde version kate 23.08.5 is using in fedora 39.

I don't think we can fix that. You need to report that to the people providing the AdwaitaDark scheme.
With Frameworks 6.3 we will try harder to use a proper style, but if the color scheme set is 'bad', we can't fix that.

Did you see where i said it's any dark Window color scheme? Breeze Dark isn't any better. I was trying to use the light window schemes b/c you can see the currently highlighted tab, but in those schemes you can't see the terminal scroll button. I don't know what project is responsible for what i'm seeing, so i reported here. glad to report somewhere else if i knew where. thanks

I missed that, but for the Breeze style dark themes work with a proper active hint. As said, for newer releases we will default to Breeze, if the widget style you use doesn't handle that well, one needs to fix it there.

I don't understand this fragment. I don't know what a "proper active hint" is, so that's probably not helping. :)

What widget style? Doesn't handle what? Breeze Dark? I thought Breeze Dark would be the "widget style" in question in this example.

Where is "there"? Are you saying the user needs to edit a file? or there is a separate project for these Window Color Schemes (term used in Kate) that i'm supposed to be reporting this issue to?

Which widget style do you use? Is the Breeze style installed?
Comment 6 Christoph Cullmann 2024-06-13 15:24:35 UTC
And, yes, we know there are issues with that outside of Plasma, we try to improve that for the future

Sounds good. Thanks

also, this issue was for colors (current editor tab and terminal scroll button) and not so much about icons. The blog post and the meta issue seem to be focused mainly on icons.

Feel free to disregard my last comment about colors. I see y'all were talking about colors too now. sorry for the noise. bugzilla won't let me edit or delete my last comment, it seems...
