Description S. Christian Collins 2024-03-15 20:24:39 UTC
SUMMARY
Clicking the "Software Sources" button in Discover's "Settings" page prompts for the root password, but the root password (sudo) is never accepted.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
These steps are for KDE neon and might vary for other distributions.
1. Make sure "software-properties-qt" is installed.
2. Start Discover.
3. Wait for update check to finish.
4. Navigate to the "Settings" page.
5. Click the "Software Sources" button on the right side of the page.

OBSERVED RESULT
A window pops up prompting for the root password. It has the window title "Run as root — KDE su" and says "The action you requested needs root privileges. Please enter root's password below or click Ignore to continue with your current privileges. Command: /usr/bin/software-properties-qt". After entering the user's password (since Ubuntu uses sudo), another box pops up with: "Permission denied. Possibly incorrect password, please try again. On some systems, you need to be in a special group (often: wheel) to use this program." The password continues to be prompted, but is never accepted.

EXPECTED RESULT
Sudo password should be accepted and software properties launched.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS

Can reproduce on neon unstable. The same password works if I run "sudo /usr/bin/software-properties-qt" in Konsole.

Operating System: KDE neon Unstable Edition
KDE Plasma Version: 6.0.80
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.0.0
Qt Version: 6.6.2
Graphics Platform: Wayland

I've had the exact same thing happen when I tried opening KSystemLog through GUI, where a "KDE su" window pops up asking for the root password, and failing with the same error message. It was fine before Plasma 6
Comment 3 Harald Sitter 2024-03-25 01:21:58 UTC
That tool isn't part of discover. Moving to neon.

Me, too.

Still present, on both Software Sources and KSystemLog.

This looks like bug 452532 rearing its head again. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452532

Will reassign to kdesu.
