"Auto-Hide" isn't the mode where the panel disappears when a window covers it; that's "Dodge Windows". Can you make sure you're using the intended setting? Also, does this happen on X11, or Wayland, or both?
Sorry, you are right: it is "Dodge windows". And it happened on Wayland, not tested on x11. I was going to do this, but now I can't replicate it (Wayland). First time, when I tried to adjust panel width, something strange happened: if I adjusted the width on one side, it did not adjust automatically on the other (even though I had the planel centered). I had to log out and log in to fix it (Dodge Windows behaviour). Now this does not happen, and the adjustment is symmetrical. After that, Dodge Windows setting still works. I'm sorry about all this. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.
Ok, I can't reproduce that issue, and if you can't either, let's close this for now. But if you manager to reproduce the issue again, feel free to re-open this bug report!
