Created attachment 166010 [details] Screenshot: Toolbar with additional buttons While YMMV, I found that I very often use the Group Elements, Sort By and Hide/Show Preview functions, as well as buttons to change the view, which all make life a lot easier. However, the first three functions are by default hidden in the menu and thus hardly accessible and I observed that those were not used at all by my not so technical experienced friends until I added them to the toolbar. Direct sorting (by clicking on the column header for instance) is only possible in the details view and only if the corresponding column is actually shown. Therefore I'd like you to rethink if any of those functions are not worth given a more prominent place by default. :)
Hey, thank you for voicing your wish! We somewhat regularly have people giving ideas about which buttons should or should not be on the toolbar. However, which buttons are useful is quite different between different user types. You might be interested in this somewhat recent discussion in which a user suggests completely different toolbar buttons than you just did: https://discuss.kde.org/t/dolphin-file-managers-bad-default-toolbar-ui-experience/10135 In any case, from the ones you suggest, the "Sort By" action is currently being discussed to be added to the Dolphin toolbar by default. The other two should not be added. The very short reasons are that "Previews" is something that users typically shouldn't have to ever toggle back and forth, and that "Group Elements" is not really useful for small folders and light file management and not necessary either for more advanced workflows (even though it can be really nice there). I hope you don't mind that I close this bug report now. The "Sort By" is already being discussed and the other two actions have already been ruled out by past discussions, so keeping this bug report open like this might lead to confusion.
"Group Elements" is especially useful in folders containing galleries (pictures). There I tend to sort them by date and use the "Group Elements" feature to have a good overview. Maybe someone can up with a good UI/UX to improve the accessibility at least in this case. Then I cross my fingers for the "Sort By" action!!
