SUMMARY Switching to automatically log in as user with session Plasma (Wayland) requires you to press the "Apply" button twice, only the first time. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Open the System Settings 2. Go to Login screen (SDDM) -> Behaviour... 3. Tick the checkbox after "Automatically log in:" (in front of "as user:") 4. Choose "Plasma (Wayland)" in the drop-down after "with session" (BTW the colon is missing here) 5. Click the Apply button. OBSERVED RESULT It looks like not everything is applied correctly and you have to change those options back as you wanted the first time and apply them again to stick. This seems to happen only on a fresh install. On subsequent trials like disabling the automatic login and enabling it again, it doesn't happen. Something is wrong only when they are applied the first time. EXPECTED RESULT Pretty Apply and putting the password to save in SSDM once, should be enough. If you try again after that, then it always works, as is should have worked in the first place.
