SUMMARY
In digikam I can rename photos (with f2 in most places); I don't seem to be able to showfoto, but think it would be useful.
In my case I've got a directory of photos gathered with an external scanner app (rather than my camera that I'd use digikam for), and I want to go and rename them to say what they are rather than the raw scanner-date-sequence.jpg; so I was using showfoto to page through them, but don't see an obvious rename.
