KMail is unusable on large gmail accounts

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Connect KMAIL with a large gmail account (like 300gb or larger)
2. Watch

OBSERVED RESULT
Messages takes hours to appears, and it starts going back to decades (I see first messages of 2007).
It seems the default is to download offline messages which will take hours indeed.

EXPECTED RESULT
Most recent emails should show first in few seconds on a good connection. It should download emails on demand by default.
As comparison, Evolution shows the recent emails instantly.

when clicking on a message

To add, when I click on any message on the list, all I get is this colorful "please wait" message that sits there for hours.
