Created attachment 164006 [details] tiny app icons horizontal SUMMARY *** See Screenshot, but ignore the wallpaper bug (that I don't know yet how to consistently reproduce) *** STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Have Plasma 6 on a tablet 2. Detach keyboard to enter tablet mode 3. Set the panel to 'dodge windows' 4. Open the info center or Okular (does not happen with some other apps like dolphin) 5. Unmaximize the window and move it so that the panel appears 6. Rotate the screen to be vertical OBSERVED RESULT 5. app icons in the panel become tiny (see screenshot) 6. app icons entirely disappear and the blue marker of which window is active is only a vertical bar of a few pixels width EXPECTED RESULT App icons remain in their size and if there is not enough space (as seen in vertical orientation), all elements (spacings) are evenly scaled down, not only app icons. Created attachment 164007 [details] Nonexistant app icons in vertical mode
It might also be relevant that I use 150% fractional scaling
It's expected that the app icons shrink when squeezed by other applets that become bigger (*something* has to get squeezed; there's no way around it), but it's not expected that the squeezing happens when there's clearly more empty space on the panel, as shown in your screenshots. That said, I can't reproduce the issue with my 2-in-1 convertible at either 200% screen scale or 150% screen scale when I follow your instructions exactly. Can you reproduce it with a 100% standard panel with no customizations?

Alright, with 100% scaling, I can not reproduce 5. anymore, but 6. is still an issue.
The issue now also appears without touch mode. And with okular, I get result 6. at step 6. with 100% scaling, breeze dark theme and panel in dodge window mode. Whereas with system settings, I get result 5. at step 6. with the same settings. Is there any easy way to reset all the panel settings to default as you requested other than reinstalling?
I now set the panel to always be visible and noticed that the issue seems to only appear when entering touch mode. Once again the steps that I did: 1. Plasma 6 RC1 with 100% scaling, breeze dark global theme, floating always visible panel with adaptive transparency, centered and set to span width 2. Open Okular or system settings (floating or maximized makes no difference) 3. Rotate the tablet to be vertical 4. lie the tablet down flat on the table What happens: 3. Plasma automatically enters touch mode (after a brief delay). This causes the app icons to become tiny in case of system settings being opened and disappear entirely when okular is opened 4. The orientation remains vertical, but if the keyboard is attached, the touch mode gets disabled and icons go back to how they are supposed to be sized.
(In reply to Tammes Burghard from comment #6) > Alright, with 100% scaling, I can not reproduce 5. anymore, but 6. is still > an issue. I can reproduce 5. again, this time with Kasts: 1. Plasma6 RC1 on a tablet 2. Open Kasts in a floating window 3. Detach keyboard to enter tablet mode 4. Icons become tiny The settings should be the same as above
Created attachment 165589 [details] Correct behavior when few apps are open When all the task icons fit in normally, it works correctly. This is an improvement over Plasma 5, which I recall didn't even do this correctly.
Created attachment 165590 [details] Undesirable outcome when task icons don't fit normally When the task icons do not fit in the available space, additional blank space is added to the right of the task widget, and all the tasks on the task widget are compressed. The correct behavior would be to switch the other icons back to desktop spacing, and if that's not enough, all icons should be condensed equally.
Very correct. In addition to your proposal of the correct behavior, I think first, the variable width spacers (which I have on both sides of the task icons) should be squished to 0. And only after that, everything should go back to desktop spacing and then be uniformly condensed. And potentially allow the system tray icons to go into multiple rows when needed. This is already possible for task icons, but I would prefer the system tray to enter that state first. For now, my workaround will be 1. Set the spacers surrounding the task icons to constant width 0 2. Remove some icons from the system tray 3. Allow task icons to form two rows when there is not enough space. Sadly, I have to make my panel thicker for this to not be unusable.

Do you have flexible width spacers around your task icon area? Adding these to center the task icons might be a relevant customization that I did.
I don't. Does the issue still reproduce if you remove them from your panel setup?
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #14) > I don't. Does the issue still reproduce if you remove them from your panel > setup? Yes but only with 150% scaling and when the screen is rotated. Otherwise there is enough breathing space for the task icons to not be squished together. From my understanding, these flexible spacers are actually not so flexible and take up a lot of space. This makes this issue much more likely to appear because it only happens when there is not enough space. The underlying issue that only task icons get squished when there is not enough space fundamentally is not an issue with the spacers, because the system tray also should not spread out as much when there is not enough space. However, flexible spacers should always shrink first and fixing that would make the rest much less annoying.
Right, it's a general problem when the panel runs out of space. It can happen in many situations. Right now the Task Manager icons are the ones that get squeezed, so you see the problem there, but if we made anything else squeeze instead, the problem would simply migrate there. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 447603 ***
