SUMMARY I have a bottom panel with an icons-only task manager. The entire panel should be transparent but plasmashell seems to ignore the setting. Setting it to translucent keeps it opague, and setting it to opague and back doesn't fix it. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Add a panel 2. Setting opague setting to translucent OBSERVED RESULT Panel remains opague EXPECTED RESULT Panel goes translucent SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Linux/KDE Plasma: Alpine Linux edge (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: KDE6 alpha, 5.27.80 KDE Frameworks Version: KDE6 alpha, 5.245.0 Qt Version: 6.6.0 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Could you share a screenshot? I can't reproduce on my end.
Created attachment 163611 [details] Screenshot of desktop with edit mode open for opague panel set to translucent As you can see the setting is set to translucent but the panel remains opague, and there is no difference outside of edit mode.

Is it translucent if you open a full screen window behind it, or if you use another background image? I think sometimes the translucency is very hard to notice, especially against that background image. Not sure if this should be considered a bug. Maybe this should be turned into a feature request about making the translucency tunable.
I do not notice a difference. But, hard to notice? On Plasma 5 the panel is completely transparent while it's not at all on the KDE6 alpha. It's not just hard to notice, it's completely different. I do not want to see the panel, I only want to see the task manager. How is this not a bug? 😅

Are you in a VM? Does it still happen if you switch to a lighter wallpaper or Breeze Light? I think it's hard to tell whether it's translucent or not when the panel and the wallpaper beneath is are both dark. Also can't reproduce FWIW.
This is not a VM no, it's my desktop on an installation that upgraded from Plasma 5. Maybe there is an old config setting messing things up? And maybe I'm misunderstanding something, is translucent not the same as transparent? I don't want to see anything of the panel, just the widget that's on there. I want it to be transparent, and it's very, very obvious that it's not transparent. I don't understand why you are talking about "hard to notice". I just noticed on my laptop, which still runs Plasma 5, the setting is set to "opague". It translates to the same word in my language and I guess I don't have a full understanding of it but doesn't that mean the opposite of transparent? Anyhow I've also tried "opague" on Plasma 6 and it didn't change anything, and neither does switching to translucent on Plasma 5 really. So to be clear, what I want is the panel to not be visible at all, just the widget that's on it. So far I fail to see how I can achieve that while it worked fine in Plasma 5.
Were you using a non-default Plasma theme in Plasma 5 that accomplished this goal? Can you attach a screenshot of your Plasma 5 setup that shows the desired state?
Created attachment 163661 [details] Screenshot of Plasma 5 desktop with desired panel configuration No I'm just using Breeze Dark. As shown on the screenshot the bottom panel is completely transparent, only the task manager widget and a network monitor is visible.
Heh, what you're seeing in Plasma 5 is a bug or a visual glitch. That's definitely not what the "Translucent" state is supposed to look like. :) The panel background is supposed to become just translucent, not disappear completely! Seems like this is working as expected in Plasma 6, and in fact the bug you were experiencing was in Plasma 5!
Oh no 🙈 I came from Latte Dock where it _was_ a feature and was glad it was a thing on the regular Plasma panel of well. I suppose this can then be turned into a feature request lol. Or is there a different way to get just a task manager on the bottom there without having it on a panel? I'm sad to see my desktop change 😢
It's already possible via a custom or 3rd-party Plasma style that uses 100% transparent SVGs for the panel. I don't think there's a clean way for us to support anything else.
