Description Christopher Hock 2023-10-18 15:11:51 UTC
SUMMARY
I am using 3 monitors connected to my ThinkPad T495 via a Lenovo ThinkPad Dock. Two of them are DELL U2414H 1080p monitors connected via mini display port. The primary monitor is a Samsung C34J79x ultra wide 1440p monitor connected via HDMI.

The Samsung monitor is new and is the one giving me troubles. After it got detected it defaulted to 1080p resolution. I tried to change that via the Display Configuration however it said it changed it but the picture still was in 1080p. Reopening Display Configuration confirmed this.
I tried setting the resolution manually using `kscreen-doctor` but to no avail.

I tried like this:
```
kscreen-doctor output.DP-3.mode.3440x1440@60
```

Rebooting a dozen times and trying again using both methods now brought me up to a 2560x1080p@60hz resolution, reported by `kscreen-doctor`. However, no further changes are possible.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Connect all three monitors to the Lenovo Dock.
2. Boot the system and try to change the resolution for the 1440p display to 1440p using either kscreen-doctor or the Display Settings application.
3. Close the Display Settings window and wait for changes
4. Re-open the Display Settings window and see that the change was not saved.

OBSERVED RESULT
The 1440p's display resolution was not set correctly. the display is stuck at 1080p and the image is blurry and stretched.

EXPECTED RESULT
I expected the resolution to be changed correctly.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: openSUSE Tumbleweed
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version:  5.27.8
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.110.0
Qt Version: 5.15.11
Session: Wayland

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Neofetch does report a resolution of 3440x1440, however I believe that is the maximum possible resolution, not any set resolution.

Does it work if you disable one or both of the 1080p screens?

Sorry for the late response, just got back to the office to test.

Yes it does. Though my colleagues are running the same setup with the same hardware and it works. Maybe my Dock is broken, anyways seems to be a connection issue not a KWIN bug I guess?
Comment 3 Zamundaaa 2023-10-27 13:48:28 UTC
It's possible, sometimes docks are weird. You can try to limit the color depth by putting
KWIN_DRM_PREFER_COLOR_DEPTH=24
into /etc/environment and rebooting; that sometimes helps.

If you could also attach the output of
> drm_info
and of
> journalctl --user-unit plasma-kwin_wayland --boot 0
after trying to set the biggest mode, that could yield some useful information.
