When steam is opened, and the computer goes asleep, all is well. When the computer wakes up, Steam is still running but its GUI is mainly solid black, and only a few components are displayed when hovering the mouse above. This sound like a Steam problem, however when clicking anywhere on the black area, the entire desktop environment crashes, and restarts automatically. This doesn't seem to happen on any other of my installed apps.
