After not touching the computer for a long time (10 mins in my config), the screen will turn off for energy saving. If I move my mouse or press any key on the keyboard after energy saving, the screen should fully come back but it does not. Instead, it is completely black except the cursor. Once I move the cursor to the upper left corner, it will show all windows as normal. However, if I click on one of the windows, the screen will go black again except the cursor. A workaround is to switch to tty and then suspend the computer. After waking up from suspend, the screen will come back as normal. STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Do not touch the computer for long enough to trigger screen energy saving 2. Touch the computer OBSERVED RESULT Completely black screen except cursor and the upper left corner thing EXPECTED RESULT Show everything as expected SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Linux: Arch Linux KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.7 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.109.0 Qt Version: 5.15.10
Maybe worth looking at Bug 469975 / Bug 473835 > It seems related to Power Management and the "Suspend Session": > > System Settings > Power Management > Energy Saving > > has "Suspend Session" enabled with a 15 minute timeout. Although these talk about Guest VMs under KVM and a 15 minute rather than 10 minute delay. A possibility though.....
Looks like a different problem. The problem I am facing does not happen with suspend. It only happens with screen energy saving. In fact, I workaround the problem by intentionally suspending and waking up the computer.
If you right-click on the black background, what happens? If you hit Alt+F2 to bring up KRunner, type "plasmashell" and hit enter, what happens? If that doesn't do anything, does anything happen if instead you enter "plasmashell --replace"?

I forgot to try right-click last time this issue happens. I will try next time. I tried Alt+F2 but I can't see KRunner. But I still type plasmashell and plasmashell --replace and hit enter, but nothing happens. I also tried going to a Konsole (by using the working upper left corner thing) and run plasmashell and plasmashell --replace, but still nothing happens.

Thanks. Does this setup include multiple screens, or just one?

Thanks. Are you using X11 or Wayland? Does the issue reproduce with both, or just one?
(In reply to Nate Graham from comment #10) > Thanks. Are you using X11 or Wayland? Does the issue reproduce with both, or > just one? Hi am using X11 but I have not tried on Wayland. Also, this issue does not always happen. It seems that it only happens after the screen is put to energy saving for a long time (not sure exact number, maybe 15 mins). If it is only at energy saving for a short time (like a few minutes), this issue does not happen.
Thanks. Can you try Wayland?
