SUMMARY
***
NOTE: If you are reporting a crash, please try to attach a backtrace with debug symbols.
See https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports
***
This is an intermittent, random problem. It usually (but not always) happens after a crash

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1.
2.
3.

OBSERVED RESULT What happens. First off, the software:
KDE Plasma v5.27.5
KDE Frameworks v5.105.0
QT v5.15.7
Kernel V6.4.9-desktop-4.mga9 64 bit
Graphics X11

I am using the Oxygen desktop.

What happens: even though my desktop icons are "locked" (the box is checked) they still sometimes change positions randomly (they are still locked). I have seen this behavior in previous versions of KDE Plasma. Rather than in the positions I had them in, they are now arranged in columns.

EXPECTED RESULT. Icons should not change position unless I actually change them

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows:
macOS:
Linux/KDE Plasma: Mageia 9 Final
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.105.0
Qt Version: 5.15.7

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Thank you

This happened again. It's happened twice in the last two days. I actually saw it happen this time. I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but it happened at exactly the same time a notification popped up saying there was a new e-mail.

Thee icons are now sorted in alphabetical order in columns
Comment 3 Lloyd Osten 2023-10-05 12:15:13 UTC
Last night (October 4 2023), I accidentally left my computer on overnight. This morning (October 5, 2023), when I turned on the monitor, I discovered all my icons were re-arranged in alphabetical order, with folders first. The icons were not locked this time, as this seems to happen whether they are locked or not....:-(

I can also confirm this bug, kde-plasma version 5.27.8.

The options that affect my desktop icons are:
- don't order
- small icons
- from left to right
- aligned to the left
They are NOT marked:
- descending order
- folders first
- locked icons

If I move the icons to any position, it is held until lunchtime, when I step away from the computer for about 40 minutes. When I return, I find the icons sorted in strict alphabetical order, aligned left to right, with no precedence for folders

This is very annoying.

Regards.

I can also confirm this bug.
There is a problem with the Plasma desktop: icons are randomly scattered across the desktop.
The desktop settings are set to "icons/arrange/top to bottom". After manually placing icons on the desktop, after 2...4 reboots/logins, the icons scatter across the desktop again.
The only thing that helps is turning on the “icons / arrange / left to right” setting.

KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.105.0
Qt Version: 5.15.7
Kernel Version: 6.4.16-desktop-3.mga9 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 620

Regards.
Andy

Hello, I can confirm that bug persists in version 5.27.9 too.

It's pratically impossible to organize your desktop with this bug.

There are multiple bugs describing the same or similar behavior for icon positioning on the desktop not being saved. I'm using 468546 as the main one.
