Description wbqq 2023-06-12 09:12:32 UTC
SUMMARY
Currently dolphin has tabs that can be split in two views, but in my opinion it would make much more sense if each split view had tabs. For example, when sorting some photographies collection, I could be switching categories tabs on the right while keeping folder to be sorted on the left, but currently I can not.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. open dolphin in split view
2. open new tab

OBSERVED RESULT
two tabs each having it's own directory opened

EXPECTED RESULT
right view remains opened where it was and left view has 2 tabs

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux: arch
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.106.0
Qt Version: 5.15.9

This would be a HUGE improvement. Please consider this. Maybe, as an option.

It looks like this was implemented. I tested with Dolphin 24.08.3. With the original use case I can do this:

Open up Dolphin
Navigate to a Photos folder
Click the Split View button (if its not configured to open in split view)
In the right hand pane I can choose any other folder. The left pane still is open to the Photos folder

Feel free to reopen this request if you don't see the same thing in Dolphin 24.08.3 or later.

You didn’t open a new tab.

The steps should look like this:
1. Open Split View
2. Open a new tab
3. Navigate to some other directories in the left and the right pane
4. Switch to the previous tab

Actual result:
Both left and right pane return to the previous directories.
(Since tabs are global)

Expected result:
Only one pane returns to the previous tab
(Each pane has its own tabs)

Reopened.

Look at any other file manager (Krusader, Nemo, …) The do it the right way.

My apologies for misunderstanding. Looking at Nemo, I see what is being talked about with tabs inside the window splits.

This has been talked about and requested since 2009

I don't think the current state of having multiple tabs which can each be in split view mode is strictly worse than what is requested here. I assume it depends on the workflow of users whether they prefer having split view mode within each tab or tabs within each split. For example the current state works well when a user uses tabs to keep distinctly separate tasks organised. They would not need to mix and match the various split view tabs then. So just replacing the current behaviour with what is requested here is IMO likely to not be the correct way to proceed.

Given all that and considering that Dolphin is supposed to be simple by default, I am not sure what should best result from this bug report. I am also not sure if the added complexity implementing this change would do more harm to Dolphin development long-term than the expected advantages for the people who are requesting this.

KDE Plasma and KDE applications are famous for their customizability. ‘One workflow fits all’ is not the KDE approach.
Dolphin has plenty of settings and this is great. Every user can use Dolphin in their own style. That’s why we all love Dolphin and KDE.
