Description Luca 2023-06-03 07:36:41 UTC
SUMMARY
7z has a lot of options both in the windows gui and in the command line utils. Ark does offer few of these options such as the compression method (that lacks the zstd, lz5, lz4 and fast lzma compression schemes anyway) and compression level.
It would be cool to be able to use the new compression schemes offered by 7-zip zstd and to be able to define the archive's dictionary length, word length and the solid block size.

For the additional compression methods see:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Ark.
2. Click New in the application's menu.
3. Select the 7-zip archive type.

OBSERVED RESULT
Ark shows the default options common to other archive formats.

EXPECTED RESULT
It should show more.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.106.0
Qt Version: 5.15.9

Regarding those new compression methods, the official 7-Zip by Igor Pavlov does not support them, so they are not official / standard yet.

Also, even though some distros have switched to the new p7zip fork (which supports those new compression methods), I wonder whether distros will eventually switch to the official 7-Zip, since it now also supports Linux.

I've seen some discussion on the fedora repos and I think honestly that every distro will eventually switch to the new fork since it includes all the changes included in the official 7-zip Linux tool.
