Description David Jarvie 2002-08-26 15:21:15 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: konqueror
Version: KDE 3.0.2
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: Not Specified
OS: Not Specified
OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified

It would be useful for KDE to be configured with localised default search engine addresses. For example in the UK I would prefer to use www.google.co.uk instead of www.google.com since that gives the option of restricting the search to pages from the UK. The local Google page in other countries has a similar facility to restrict the search to pages from the relevant country.

Excite also has a localised page dependent on country.

So could we please have all search engine default pages localised where possible?

You can already change the default search engine (as well as the one
associated with any search-engine shortcut).

Changing the defaults to use the locale might not necessarily make sense (even
when I use KDE in French I might still want to run international google
queries not limited to french pages).

I didn't mean to base the localisation on the language but on the country. I
didn't realise that it was possible to change the default search engine pages
other than by editing files in /opt/kde3/share/ but I would still say that a
default of the page for the country which is configured in KControl would be
better than the USA version. As you say this can always be changed if the
user desires. I just think that more users would be likely to want their own
country's page than the USA page.
