Description php4fan 2023-05-16 13:55:52 UTC
SUMMARY
Almost every single time I boot, I get an entirely black desktop, with no background image or icons.

Running the following from a terminal fixes it:
$ killall plasmashell
$ kstart5 plasmashell

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. restart the system
2. log in

OBSERVED RESULT
The desktop is black with no icons

EXPECTED RESULT
There should be a background image and icons

I use an external monitor as the only screen, i.e. the laptop's built-in screen is disabled (and the laptop lid is usually closed) during the whole restart.

I thought I had already reported this but I can't find it. All I could find is a report against OpenSUSE.
I am using Manjaro now.

I have had this issue forever.

In System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Background Services, is the "KScreen 2" service active?

The checkbox is checked and on the right it says "Running".

This is when the desktop is working after having restarted plasmashell.

Do you need me to check while observing the issue before I restart plasmashell?
Comment 3 Nate Graham 2023-05-17 14:46:42 UTC
Nah, it'll be active then too.

Can you paste the output of `kscreen-doctor -o` before rebooting, then again after rebooting when the problem happens? I'd like to see if the output is identical in both cases, which would indicate an issue exclusively in Plasma.
