SUMMARY On Fedora 37 under Xorg, Plasma Application Launcher performs sluggish when moving the mouse pointer over the application categories. For testing, I installed Kubuntu 22.04.2 (also under Xorg) on the same laptop (Acer F5-572G from 2015, i5-6200u processor, 8 gigs RAM, SATA SSD). I created a screen record on both of the distros to show the difference in menu behaviour. For some reason the screen record on Fedora 37 flashes (the screen doesn't flash when I was creating the recording). STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. move mouse pointer over the application categories in Application Launcher 2. 3. OBSERVED RESULT Plasma 5.27.4 performs slower than Plasma 5.24.7 EXPECTED RESULT SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS Windows: macOS: Linux/KDE Plasma: Kubuntu 22.04.2 and Fedora 37 (available in About System) KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.7 and 5.27.4 KDE Frameworks Version: Qt Version: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Here's the URL for the screen recordings (they were too large to attach to this bug report): https://akik.kapsi.fi/plasma-bug/screen-records.zip
The only major thing I can think of that's changed vis-a-vis that launcher menu between 5.24 and 5.27 is the addition of a triangle menu filter, which could indeed be causing a performance issue. I'm CCing some people who are familiar with it.
I just tested with Wayland on the same laptop, and the application launcher works fine in Wayland.
Well this is embarrassing. I reinstalled Fedora 37 Plasma spin on the laptop and the problem is gone :(
Looks like the application launcher is still not working as snappy as with plasma 5.24.7. Here's a new simplescreenrecord of it on plasma 5.27.4: https://akik.kapsi.fi/plasma-bug/simplescreenrecorder-2023-05-01_10.34.03.mkv
This has been fixed for Plasma 6 with a couple of changes that make it near instant for me.
