I opened a command prompt and tried your troubleshooting commands.

Check that the process is listening on the network: sudo netstat -tunelp | grep -i kdeconnect
error: sudo is not a recognized command

Are the ports open/blocked? netcat -z -v <your-phones-ip> 1714-1764
error: cannot find file

I opened the ports to no avail. Same results

scrn shot of KDE connect

I rebooted both the computer and the phone with slightly better results...but serious problems still remain. See screen shot 2. As that shows, the phone and computer connected, but all the words are gibberish --words are missing letters. I also discovered that if I try to edit the computer name, then only about half the keys on my keyboard are detected. I want this to work so that I can send SMS messages from my Windows 10pro laptop. Is that possible. Currently, i do not see that function is available.
